We did it!
After intense pressure, Iceland bosses have renewed their commitment to ending cruel cages.
This is a huge victory for animals. When Iceland backtracked on its cage-free commitment earlier this year, thousands of hens were put at risk of lives in dark, cramped cages.
But then you stepped up in a massive way:
- Over 100,000 emails were sent to Iceland bosses, demanding they re-instate their commitment.
- Over 70,000 people signed this petition to Iceland (including you!)
- Iceland Executive Director Richard Walker’s social accounts were flooded with hundreds of comments.
- Supporters like you sent hundreds of physical letters to Richard at his HQ.
- Dedicated THL UK volunteers organised events outside Iceland stores around the country, and placed hundreds of stickers on egg-cartons in Iceland stores to highlight animal cruelty.
(And there was so much more, including the Easter bunny handing in a hamper - containing a “worst of the worst” rosette - to Richard at Iceland HQ.)
Iceland’s cage-free commitment is set for 2027, which is later than many of its competitors. We will be pushing for Iceland to move as fast as possible and will be holding bosses to this promise every step of the way.
Today, I simply want to say a huge thank you for winning yet another victory for animals with us. This is a hugely significant moment on the road towards ending cruel cages for good.
Always, for the animals,
Katie Ferneyhough, Head of Programs at The Humane League UK
