Petition to Build an Ice Rink in Winton

We, the undersigned, support the construction of an ice rink in Winton to provide greater opportunities for sport, recreation, and community connection in Southland.

Currently, people interested in ice sports such as figure skating, ice hockey, curling, and public skating must travel long distances, often to Gore or Queenstown, to access suitable facilities. This creates barriers for families, young people, and athletes who would benefit from having an ice rink closer to home.

There could also be an off ice training facility in the rink, and ballet classes, so if some people aren’t interested in any ice sports, but want to do ballet, they could join the ballet classes too.

An ice rink in Winton would:

Encourage healthy and active lifestyles for people of all ages.
Provide local opportunities for figure skating, ice hockey, and recreational skating. 
Support youth development through access to new sports and activities.
Reduce travel time and costs for Southland families.
Create a unique community facility that could attract visitors and events to the area.
Strengthen community connections by providing a year-round recreational venue.
