Woody's/ICandy, Diversify your Space and Music for LGBTQ of Color

The Issue

For too long, these bars have not provided a "unique nightlife experience" to all members of the LGBTQ of Philadelphia. Whether it's ICandy's deliberate omission of black and Latino sounds/artists from its playlist or Woody's racially biased bartenders and staff -- it seeks to subliminally suggest that its audience is not catered to them. Furthermore, given the huge diversity of LGBTQ young adults and professionals in our city, the vibe currently creates non-progressive microaggressions that currently goes against what The Gayborhood should stand for: intersectionality & inclusion.

If you are an LGBTQ of color or an ally for such cause, you should sign the petition putting this institution in a position to deal with their current signs of potential racism and de facto segregation among what should be a safe space for all.

Until that is being addressed publicly and justly, I call for a boycott of these spaces until then. Our patronage should not be given to gay clubs where they love our money, but disregard our culture, spacial visibility and diversity. Having paying people of color in a room doesn't make you grandstanding...embracing them and their heritage does.

Fix the problem, or face the economic divestment.
