The International Air Transport Association - IATA - should immediately remove Belarus and the Lukashenko-owned airline Belavia from membership in the organization, after Lukashenko highjacked a Ryanair flight to arrest an oppositional activist.

On May 23, Alexander Lukashenko organized the seizure of the Ryanair passenger flight en route from Athens to Vilnius. There were more than 120 passengers on board, most of them citizens of the European Union.

The flight landed at the national airport of Minsk after receiving a message from the Belarusian authorities of an alleged bomb onboard. As soon as the plane landed in Minsk, the security forces detained one of the founders of the opposition telegram channel Nexta, Roman Protasevich.

In order to make sure the flight landed in Belarus, Lukashenko sent fighter jets to escort the plane further endangering passengers lives.

IATA is committed to collaborating between airlines to promote safe, reliable and economical air travel - for the benefit of global consumers. However, on May 23, Lukashenko showed that he is willing to risk the lives of more than 120 passengers for his personal political goals. It is unacceptable!

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary said the landing of the Ryanair plane was "an act of state-sponsored highjacking". He also said that there were two more KGB officers on board among the passengers.

European diplomats demand new sanctions against Lukashenka. Latvian airline airBaltic has decided NOT to fly over the territory of Belarus. Polish Airlines LOT is also considering this issue now.

We demand the exclusion of Belarus in the face of the state airline Belavia from IATA!
