Due to the ongoing threat of climate change, human disturbance and feral animals, one of the smallest penguins in the world, our little penguin, needs our help.

The species once occupied a large range along Australia's mainland coast and nearby islands, but a number of threats - including habitat destruction, feral-animal attacks, pollution and a deteriorating food supply - have led to a dramatic decline in its numbers. The little penguin now has a patchy distribution along mainland temperate-zone coasts; populations are largely restricted to Australia's small offshore islands
In the region off Victor Harbor the Penguin colonies on West Island and Wright Island are extinct. The colony on Granite Island is now in the low 20’s. The colonies on Kangaroo Island are under threat with the main colonies at Penneshaw and Kingscote declining in numbers. Scientist have identified that the highest risk factor to little penguins in the areas off Granite Island and Kangaroo Island is the rapid increase of New Zealand fur seals in these areas.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN
In South Australia we need colonies like those on Granite Island, Penneshaw and Kingscote to be listed as endangered. We need to find out if the Little Penguins in South Australia are genetically distinct from the colonies of other States, and we need to gain an understanding of how threats are impacting on different little penguin populations so that that overarching conservation strategies for little penguins can be established to safeguard them for future generations.

We need the South Australia state government to take action to ensure the longevity of our little penguins.

At their council meeting on 23/6/14, the City of Victor Harbor approved the following recommendations (below) to be put forward to the next Local Government Association (LGA) annual general meeting in October, to request that the LGA lobby the state government.

We now also need the general public's support to help lobby for this.

1. We need the State Government to initiate a breeding program of local little penguins from identified populations to ensure longevity of their unique DNA and to enhance their survival as a sub species.

2. We need the State Government to introduce a management plan and implement strategies for the control of the New Zealand Fur Seals in South Australia, to reduce the impact on our marine environment.

You can help. Please sign and support our petition to lobby the South Australian State Government to take action now, before it's too late.
