In June 2014 youths stole, tormented, tortured and eventually killed a much-loved pet dog named Kenzy before burning her lifeless body. The sickening attack, which included impalement on a sharpened stick, happened on the Owton Manor Estate, Hartlepool.

The horrific story caused outrage when it appeared in the local paper, and Kenzy's owner soon received information from multiple sources on the  boys' identities, which she passed onto the police. Two brothers aged 16 and 12 were taken in for questioning and later bailed.

Despite the weight of witness evidence, the police closed their investigation 3 months later, saying that no further action would be taken due to "lack of evidence". This despite the fact that the younger brother had boasted to classmates about what they had done.

It is unacceptable that these boys will never be punished for their crime. These youths have shown themselves capable of horrifying sadistic violence and will undoubtedly turn into extremely dangerous adults. The elder brother is now 18 years old and a father. 

Aside from the fact that no justice has been served for the killing of a defenceless dog, we believe that these brothers represent a serious risk to the public.

As upholders of law and order Cleveland Police have a duty to reopen their investigation and to do whatever is necessary to ensure Kenzy's killers are properly punished.
