I’m not Afghan

We, the undersigned, hereby petition for the formal recognition of our identity as Khorasani and the rejection of the term "Afghan" for the following reasons:

Historical and Linguistic Context

The term "Afghan" (or "Aughan") specifically refers to the Pashtun ethnic group. Coupled with the Persian suffix "Stan," meaning land, "Afghanistan" translates to "the land of the Pashtuns." Given that the majority of the population in our region is not Pashtun, it is more appropriate to describe all citizens as Khorasani.

Historical Evidence

Historical records from Al-Biruni, Ferdowsi, and Ibn Battuta confirm that "Afghan" was used to describe the Pashtun inhabitants of South Asia, primarily around the Suleiman Mountain ranges. This terminology was imposed and popularized during British colonial rule, particularly with Amir Abdur Rahman Khan’s centralization efforts.

Ethnic and Cultural Diversity

Khorasan, historically known as a region spanning northeastern Iran, central and northern Tajikistan, and parts of Uzbekistan, Pakistan, China, and Turkmenistan, is home to a diverse population. This includes Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras, Aimaqs, Turkmen, Baluchis, Qizilbash, and more. The term "Afghan" does not represent this diversity, whereas "Khorasani" encompasses all ethnicities fairly.

Cultural and Linguistic Heritage

Persian has historically been the lingua franca, the language of learning, commerce, and governance in Khorasan. Despite its dominance, the 2004 Constitution imposed Pashto, the language of the Pashtuns, as the language of the national anthem, disregarding the majority who speak Persian.

Current Misrepresentation and Identity Distortion

The term "Afghan" has become synonymous with terrorism, conflict, and hardship due to the actions of a minority of Pashtun extremists. This misrepresentation tarnishes the rich cultural heritage of Khorasan, a land of poets, philosophers, scientists, and artists.

Call for Identity Recognition

We urge the relevant authorities and the international community to recognize our identity as Khorasani, reflecting our historical and cultural roots. The term "Khorasani" is neutral and inclusive, representing all ethnic groups residing in our region.

Conclusion

We proudly identify as Khorasani, honoring the profound heritage and contributions of our ancestors. This identity, rooted in an ancient civilization known for its cultural richness and peaceful coexistence, is distinct from the turmoil associated with the term "Afghan."

In light of the above, we call for:

1. Official recognition of the term "Khorasani" for all citizens of our region.

2. A revision of national documents and terminology to reflect this identity.

3. An inclusive approach that honors the diversity and historical legacy of Khorasan.

ما، امضاکنندگان زیر، با این دادخواست درخواست شناسایی رسمی هویت خود به عنوان خراسانی و رد اصطلاح "افغان" را به دلایل زیر داریم

زمینه تاریخی و زبانی

اصطلاح "افغان" (یا "اوغان") به طور خاص به گروه قومی پشتون اشاره دارد. همراه با پسوند پارسی "ستان" به معنی زمین، "افغانستان" به معنای "سرزمین پشتون‌ها" است. با توجه به اینکه اکثریت جمعیت منطقه ما پشتون نیستند، توصیف همه شهروندان به عنوان خراسانی مناسب‌تر است

شواهد تاریخی

سوابق تاریخی از البیرونی، فردوسی و ابن بطوطه تأیید می‌کنند که "افغان" برای توصیف ساکنان پشتون جنوب آسیا، عمدتاً در اطراف رشته‌کوه‌های سلیمان، استفاده می‌شده است. این اصطلاح در دوران استعمار بریتانیا، به ویژه با تلاش‌های متمرکز امیر عبدالرحمان خان، تحمیل و محبوبیت یافت

تنوع قومی و فرهنگی

خراسان، که به عنوان منطقه‌ای در شمال شرقی ایران، مرکزی و شمالی  تاجیکستان و بخش‌هایی از ازبکستان، پاکستان، چین و ترکمنستان شناخته می‌شود، خانه‌ای برای جمعیت متنوعی از جمله تاجیک‌ها، ازبک‌ها، هزاره‌ها، ایماق‌ها، ترکمن‌ها، بلوچ‌ها، قزلباش‌ها و بیشتر است. اصطلاح "افغان" این تنوع را نمایندگی نمی‌کند، در حالی که "خراسانی" به طور منصفانه تمام قومیت‌ها را در بر می‌گیرد.

میراث فرهنگی و زبانی

فارسی به طور تاریخی زبان میانجی، زبان آموزش، تجارت و حکومت در خراسان بوده است. علیرغم برتری آن، قانون اساسی ۲۰۰۴ پشتو، زبان پشتون‌ها، را به عنوان زبان سرود ملی تحمیل کرد و اکثریت فارسی‌زبان را نادیده گرفت.

تحریف هویت و نمایش نادرست کنونی

اصطلاح "افغان" به دلیل اقدامات اقلیت پشتون‌های افراطی مترادف با تروریسم، درگیری و سختی شده است. این نمایش نادرست میراث فرهنگی غنی خراسان، سرزمین شاعران، فیلسوفان، دانشمندان و هنرمندان را لکه‌دار می‌کند.

درخواست برای شناسایی هویت

ما از مقامات ذی‌ربط و جامعه بین‌المللی می‌خواهیم که هویت ما را به عنوان خراسانی شناسایی کنند و ریشه‌های تاریخی و فرهنگی ما را منعکس کنند. اصطلاح "خراسانی" بی‌طرف و فراگیر است و نماینده تمام گروه‌های قومی ساکن در منطقه ما می‌باشد.

نتیجه‌گیری

ما با افتخار خود را خراسانی می‌شناسیم و میراث عمیق و مشارکت‌های نیاکان خود را گرامی می‌داریم. این هویت، ریشه‌دار در تمدن باستانی که به خاطر غنای فرهنگی و همزیستی مسالمت‌آمیز شناخته می‌شود، از آشفتگی‌های مرتبط با اصطلاح "افغان" متمایز است.

در پرتو مطالب فوق، ما خواستار

۱. شناسایی رسمی اصطلاح "خراسانی" برای همه شهروندان منطقه ما.

۲. تجدیدنظر در اسناد و اصطلاحات ملی برای انعکاس این هویت.

۳. رویکردی فراگیر که تنوع و میراث تاریخی خراسان را ارج نهد.
