The current Aiken City Code prohibits the discharge of firearms or other weapons within the City limits,subject to certain very limited exceptions,including the use of weapons by  peace officers and by persons protecting their lives or property.The City of Aiken has undertaken an effort to amend the Code to allow for the discharge of firearms within the City to remove "destructive and/or hazardous wildlife" pursuant to a permit that would be issued by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.  We feel this action, which has already pitted neighbor against neighbor, would lessen the security of our neighborhoods and upset the peacefulness we expect in our homes.  The possibility of a tragic accident cannot be overlooked.
