Withdraw from dam construction & cut ties with corrupt Taib government

Thousands of people in the wilderness of Malaysian Borneo are set to lose their homes, as a controversial plan to build a string of huge hydro dams gets under way.

In the state of Sarawak, the Bakun Dam has already flooded an area the size of Singapore, displacing indigenous communities, some of whom say they’ve never received the full compensation they were promised.

These projects will destroy Sarawak’s remaining great rivers and jungles.

We must stop this destruction!

I've just signed the following petition addressed to: Hydro Tasmania.

Hello,

I am deeply disappointed to learn that Hydro Tasmania's subsidiary company Entura is involved in a whole range of projects linked to Taib’s plan to flood Sarawak with 12 new dams over the coming years.

Andrew Pattle, the Australian project director of three dam projects in the rainforests of Malaysian Borneo said that “safety and environmental compliance are not given (…) much importance” with dam-building in Malaysia.

I urge Hydro Tasmania to withdraw from the highly controversial dam programs in Sarawak, and immediately cut its business ties with the highly corrupt Taib government.

I also urge Malaysian Government Ministers to withdraw from supporting dam programs in Sarawak.

Sincerely,
