Hybrid Learning at SFU

Hybrid Learning at SFU
The Issue
What is Hybrid Learning?
Hybrid learning is a style of education that incorporates both in-person and virtual learning, typically in a 50/50 split, giving students the flexibility to receive their education as they desire. Through our petition, we plan to motivate Simon Fraser University’s Student Services and administrators to implement hybrid learning. Upon our success, students will be able to learn both in-person and remotely according to their personal preferences.
Our goals include:
- Mandatory lecture and tutorial recordings
- Availability of both online and in-person lectures, tutorials, and office hours of professors and TAs
Why Should You Care?
The initial shift to online learning due to the pandemic has already set the stage for a seamless implementation of our flexible learning system. Throughout the past two years, many students have benefited greatly from online learning, using it as an opportunity to escape social anxiety and bullying, and to flourish in their studies where online learning simply suits them better than in-person classes. Instructors have garnered ample experience throughout the pandemic to easily provide in-person and online resources simultaneously. Additionally, fewer students will have to commute to campus if they are free to watch lectures from home. This will save the students themselves time, stress, free up parking for those who wish to attend physical classes, and reduce emissions and congestion by taking vehicles off the road. Furthermore, this will decrease transportation and housing costs for many, though the continued availability of on-campus classes and lodging will allow students to study in Canada as per their preference. International students will also be able to attend SFU remotely from their home countries if that is their preference.
Please participate in this petition to help us make learning at SFU convenient and effective!
