Recently, there has been a proposal to close our home school, Joseph R. Perry Elementary; a school which is part of Huntington Beach City School District. This was decided after a process by an 11- member task force made a recommendation that represented no one from the Perry neighborhoods! The applications were also not in Spanish, which could be a violation of the law. The Superintendent recommended the closure of our school after the “task force” without our voice made a 7-4 decision to close our school. This was very controversial because four of those members did not believe Perry should close. In fact, they were so offended by this that they drafted a dissenting letter and sent it out to the media. Part of the reason is that Perry already went through a similar study last year and that group decided unanimously that the school should remain open and improvements should be made to it. That it is a valuable part of our Latino community and that our kids would have to travel in many cases much further than if another school were to close. We believe we are being targeted by our school district because of who we are! Some of our other parents have made connections with civil rights groups such as LULAC and a Mexican American law group in Los Angeles, but we need to have our voices heard! Our Superintendent has never supported us and has actually said negative things about our wonderful school. Why would he do this? Because they believe our families don’t matter or won't put up a fight. This is a serious problem, considering the fact that Perry has the highest low-income students (49%) and the highest amount of Latino students (40%). These percentages are much higher than any other school in the Huntington Beach City School District. These students' families rely on special resources such as transportation and ESL, which not many elementary schools provide. We are part of a loving community of teachers and students who if they are not like us, respect us. If our school were to close, our students, for the most part, would travel much further than other students than if their school were to close (such as Moffett, Hawes, or Peterson). Where will our children be transferred to? Will other schools provide the same resources for their low-income students? Will we be welcomed and loved? Many parents chose Perry due to the vast amount of opportunities it provided to not only their children but to themselves as well. Latino and low-income communities will suffer the most! This is not right!  Join me in getting signatures and speaking out to the school board to stop this closure! Recientemente, ha habido una propuesta para cerrar nuestra escuela, Joseph R. Perry Elementary; una escuela que forma parte del distrito escolar de Huntington Beach City. ¡Esto se decidió después de que un proceso de un grupo de trabajo de 11 miembros hizo una recomendación que no representaba a nadie de los vecindarios de Perry! Las solicitudes tampoco estaban en español, lo que podría ser una violación de la ley. Muchas familias Latinas no saben lo que a estado ocurriendo estos ultimos dias. El Superintendente recomendó el cierre de nuestra escuela después de que el "task force" sin nuestra voz tomó una decisión de 7-4 de cerrar nuestra escuela. Esto fue muy controvertido porque cuatro de esos miembros no creían que Perry Elementary debería cerrar. De hecho, se sintieron tan ofendidos por esto que redactaron una carta disidente y la enviaron a los medios. Parte de la razón es que Perry ya realizó un estudio similar el año pasado y ese grupo decidió por unanimidad que la escuela debería permanecer abierta y que se deberían hacer mejorias. Que es una parte valiosa de nuestra comunidad latina y que nuestros hijos tendrían que viajar en muchos casos mucho más lejos que si otra escuela cerrara. ¡Creemos que nuestro distrito escolar nos está atacando por lo que somos! Algunos de nuestros otros padres han hecho conexiones con grupos de derechos civiles como LULAC y un grupo legal Mexicano-Estadounidense en Los Ángeles, ¡pero necesitamos que se escuche nuestra voz! Nuestro Superintendente nunca nos ha apoyado y ha dicho cosas negativas sobre nuestra maravillosa escuela. ¿Por qué él haría eso? Porque creen que nuestras familias no nos importan o no pelearán. Este es un problema grave, considerando el hecho de que Perry tiene los estudiantes de bajos ingresos más altos (49%) y la mayor cantidad de estudiantes latinos (40%). Estos porcentajes son mucho más altos que cualquier otra escuela en el Distrito Escolar de Huntington Beach City. Las familias de estos estudiantes dependen de recursos especiales como el transporte y el ESL, que no proporcionan muchas escuelas primarias. Somos parte de una comunidad amorosa de maestros y estudiantes que, si no son como nosotros, nos respetan. Si nuestra escuela cerrara, nuestros estudiantes, en su mayor parte, viajarían mucho más lejos que otros estudiantes que si su escuela cerrara (como Moffett, Hawes o Peterson) y muchas de estas personas no tienen lo recursos para llevar a sus hijos a la escuela. ¿A dónde serán transferidos nuestros hijos? ¿Proporcionarán otras escuelas los mismos recursos para sus estudiantes de bajos ingresos? ¿Seremos bienvenidos y amados? Muchos padres eligieron a Perry debido a la gran cantidad de oportunidades que brinda no solo a sus hijos sino también a ellos mismos. ¡Las comunidades latinas y de bajos ingresos serán las que más sufrirán! ¡Esto no está bien! ¡Únase a mí para obtener firmas y hablar con la junta escolar para detener este cierre!
