Objection to Salty Bottom Area Industrial Development

The Issue

We, the undersigned citizens submit this petition opposing the industrial development of the county area West of the town of Gurley which is the home of Madison County Elementary School, East of Madison County High School in the Salty Bottom/Gurley community for the following reasons:

1) With the proximity to Madison County High School, there is a concern of traffic and rail congestion affecting the safety of our children. The railroad sidetracks and heavy and frequent train traffic now proposed will be even more problematic and aggravated,

2) Non-disclosure to area citizens/residents of intent by the City of Huntsville, AL, Madison County, AL, and unnamed future planned developers, with no plan describing the intended industry,
3) Plan to displace/destroy agricultural industry in said area namely acres of cattle and crop farming,
4) Noise and light pollution and other nuisances,
5) Lack of transparency and conducting behind-closed-doors meeting to discuss and possible decision making,
6) Displacement of families who have worked area farms through multiple generations,
7) Other land in the general area is listed for sale and not being openly considered and
8) Plan appears to favor "friends" of the city/county Government who in the past have developed several tracts and supposedly received tax incentives to do so.
It is requested that public meetings be convened to openly discuss plans for this area, inviting all those that may be affected or may be interested in planned development. It reflects badly on those behind any project when this is not done. Only then, if supported by area residents, should discussion of proposed plans move forward.
