Call upon Hungarian government to withdraw the anti-LGBTQ legal bill
The Issue
Recently, the Hungarian government introduced a new bill which is an obvious attack on the LGBTQ+ community, freedom of speech and children rights. The proposal is an amendment which conflates p*dophilia with LGBTQ people. This by itself, is already highly concerning.
In the name of "protecting children", this bill would ban any kind of education about LGBTQ topics for children and students. Meaning, educational programs, trainings, or even talking about the topic with a class for people under the age of 18, would be illegal. This not only prevents queer youth from reaching out or grow up in a safe, educated enviroment, but also would deepen the already high discrimination, homophobia and intolerance in the Hungarian society.
This bill also contains banning people under the age of 18 from seeing or hearing anything with LGBTQ representation, calling it "promotion or portraying of homosexual/trans identities". For instance, if someone at the age of 16, watched a movie or read a book with LGBTQ represenation, or listened to a song which touches the topic of queerness, it would be illegal. This again, endangers the safety, acceptance and well being of the Hungarian LGBTQ youth. Despite the high rate of bullying and suicide attemps amoung youth because of homophobia and transphobia, the grovernment is still eager on eliminating LGBTQ rights from the country. This mentality goes against the equality and human right values that the European Union, and the many of us support.
It is not the first time such event occurs in Hungary. Last year in december, a law successfully passed that denies same sex couples from adopting a child. The base laws of the country states that "a mother is a female and a father is a male" which clearly violates the rights of LGBTQ people. Several other anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ bills has passed, and the list goes on.
The Hungarian Parliament is voting about the proposal on the 15th of June. This is our reach out for help. Signing this petition could draw attention on the issue, helping it be more represented by organizations, individuals or the media, and therefore help the urgent withdrawal of the bill. In case this proposal passes, it would be a huge setback both for human rights and democracy in Hungary.
