Subject: Humble Appeal for IT Employee Welfare Amidst Rising Layoffs
We, the employees of India's Information Technology (IT) sector, humbly submit this appeal to bring attention to the growing concern of large-scale layoffs across the industry. These job losses are affecting not only employees but also their families, causing significant financial and emotional hardship.
Through various media reports and industry sources, we have observed an increasing trend of workforce reductions across many IT companies. Millions of employees who have diligently contributed to the nation's growth through their skills, hard work, and regular payment of income taxes are now facing uncertainty and distress.
Many affected professionals are struggling to meet essential financial commitments such as home loan EMIs, education expenses, healthcare costs, and daily household needs. In several cases, families are being compelled to liquidate their savings or sell assets simply to sustain themselves during periods of unemployment.
In view of these challenges, we respectfully request the Government of India to consider the following welfare measures for employees affected by layoffs:
1. Tax Relief on Layoff Compensation
Severance pay, layoff compensation, termination benefits, and Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) payouts should be exempt from income tax. Taxing individuals during a period of involuntary unemployment places an additional burden on those already facing financial hardship.
2. Layoff Reporting and Tracking Mechanism
Establish a structured system requiring companies to report layoff details, including employee information, salary details, and years of service, to designated state and central employment authorities. This would help assess the scale of the issue and facilitate timely support.
3. Temporary Financial Assistance
Provide financial assistance equivalent to at least 30% of the employee's last drawn gross salary until re-employment or the end of the financial year, whichever is earlier.
4. Continuation of Health Insurance Coverage
Ensure continuity of health insurance benefits for employees and their dependent family members, including parents, for the remaining period of the policy year where premiums have already been paid.
5. Interest-Free Emergency Loans
Provide access to interest-free loans of up to ₹10 lakh to support affected employees in meeting essential expenses and financial obligations during their transition period.
This appeal is made with utmost respect and is not intended as criticism of any government, political party, organization, or individual. It is a sincere request made in the interest of the welfare of taxpayers and working professionals who have contributed significantly to India's economic growth.
We believe that such measures would strengthen confidence among salaried employees, provide much-needed social security during difficult times, and encourage continued participation in the nation's development.
We respectfully request your kind consideration of these proposals and remain hopeful for a positive response.
With highest respect and gratitude,
