HUMANE TREATMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY AT RRJ
The Issue
That inmates in the jail don't get treated with dignity, humanity, and respect. Incarceration or detention should never man being denied necessary medical care, having legitimate mental-health needs ignored, being subjected to degrading or unnecessary treatment, or being provided food that is unsafe or unfit for human consumption.
We are calling for transparency, accountability, and meaningful change.
WE ARE ASKING FOR:
1. Adequate Medical Care
Individuals in custody must receive timely and appropriate medical evaluation and treatment. Injuries, illnesses, pain, and medical concerns must be taken seriously and addressed without unnecessary delays.
2. Proper Mental-Health Care
Mental-health concerns must be evaluated and treated by qualified professionals. No person should have legitimate mental-health needs ignored, dismissed, or mishandled.
3. Humane and Respectful Treatment
People in custody must not be subjected to humiliation, unnecessary punishment, intimidation, degrading treatment, or abuse. Correctional practices must remain humane and consistent with applicable laws, policies, and constitutional protections.
4. Safe and Edible Food
Meals provided to incarcerated individuals must be safe, sanitary, nutritious, and fit for human consumption. Food that is spoiled, contaminated, or otherwise unsafe must never be served.
5. Independent Investigation and Oversight
We call for credible, independent investigation of reported conditions and allegations of mistreatment, with appropriate corrective action when violations are substantiated.
6. Transparency and Accountability
Officials responsible for the care and custody of individuals must be held accountable for failures in medical care, mental-health services, treatment, sanitation, food safety, and other basic standards of humane care.
OUR DEMAND
We are not asking for special treatment.
We are asking for basic human dignity, safety, accountability, and justice.
We urge the responsible authorities to investigate these concerns, listen to the people affected, protect those who report mistreatment, and take immediate action to correct conditions that violate basic standards of humane treatment.
No one deserves to be treated without dignity simply because they are behind bars.
