In a press release, the IACHR Condemns Alarming Numbers of LGBT Killings in the Americas since the beginning of 2017. “This situation in disturbing and unsustainable,” said Commissioner Francisco Eguiguren Praeli, IACHR Rapporteur on the Rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Persons (LGBTI). He added “States must urgently adopt the necessary measures to put an end to these situations and ensure that these crimes are investigated using a differentiated approach. The high levels of barbarity and cruelty could be because the perpetrators were motivated by prejudice based on the victim’s real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity or expression, something that must be clarified. There must be no impunity, and reparation must be made to the victims and their families”. En un comunicado de prensa, la CIDH condena alarmantes cifras de asesinatos de personas LGBT en la región desde comienzos de 2017. “Esta situación es preocupante e insostenible”, dijo el Comisionado Francisco Eguiguren Praeli, Relator sobre los Derechos de las Personas Lesbianas, Gay, Bisexuales, Trans e Intersex (LGBTI) de la CIDH. Agregó, “es urgente que los Estados adopten las medidas necesarias para poner fin a estas situaciones, además de asegurar que estos crímenes sean investigados con enfoque diferenciado. Los altos índices de ensañamiento y crueldad podrían deberse a que los autores hayan actuado motivados por el prejuicio en razón de la orientación sexual, identidad y/o expresión de género –real o percibida- de la víctima, cuestión que es necesario esclarecer. Es menester que no haya lugar a la impunidad y se logre reparar a las víctimas y a sus familiares”.
