Culture allows us to adapt to new environs at a much greater speed than biological evolution would allow. It may go without saying that culture isn't just an engine of change- just as often, in fact, it actually seems to exert an inertia that prevents change from happening even when change is exactly what's needed. You can look to any people's histories and find examples of individuals offering their people positive change, only to find their messages falling on deaf ears. Some of these visionaries fade into the ages, while others find fame and validation only after death. Ultimately, are we really a species defined by our ability to change or are we better defined by our collective fear of change?
