Censure Mayor Shubert Now

The Issue

PETITION: CENSURE HUDSON MAYOR CRAIG SHUBERT

I support a citizen’s censure of Hudson Mayor Craig Shubert following his repeated, false, defamatory demands that Hudson School Board members resign for allowing educators to distribute “essentially what is child pornography in the classroom” and for other actions he has taken since he was elected. And for his claims that a Judge he spoke to would 'charge' the board with crimes.

Those demands have no basis in fact, and his claims have been rebuked by the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office, which said Shubert’s statement at a Sept. 13 school board meeting was “not only rash but irresponsible.” The Judge denied publicly that she had backed charges. Shubert lied. His reckless antics incited 150+ vile threats and violement messages to our Board members, who are also our neighbors.

Shubert claims he speaks for the citizens of Hudson, but he does not. His ongoing attempts to exceed his authority as mayor, which is a ceremonial position with no legislative authority, and his attacks against city and school officials, have damaged this community, and materially impacted our award-winning schools.

A drive to gather signatures to recall the mayor has been paused, but that does not preclude this petition to signify the concerns of residents that the mayor’s ongoing reckless conduct is detrimental to the success of our city.

SHUBERT’S PRIOR ISSUES
The night he was elected in 2019 he issued a directive to the City Manager and several city employees to meet with him to report on their work assignments. He was told he did not have that authority.

He then tried to have the City Charter modified to provide him with that authority. During that process he declared that a mayor has more authority than a 4-star General.

He tried to have the Council President removed on alleged ethics charges. An investigation found no wrongdoing worthy of removal from office.

He was involved in two incidents with Fire and Safety in which he broadcast that a person in the Fire Department was injured without ensuring that family were notified first. He interfered with a police investigation of a fatal car crash and had to be escorted out of the police investigation area.

He was supportive of an unsuccessful effort in October 2020 by a group of residents who filed a complaint with the International City/County Management Association that alleged multiple ethical violations by the City Manager. The association determined there were no grounds to pursue the complaint.

He has ignored county health directives regarding COVID-19, encouraging city workers to return to City Hall while the government was on lockdown.
