Haddonfield Memorial High School in NJ identified a hate symbol in the yearbook. The investigation found no hateful intent by the student. Sound familiar? What did the district do? They replaced the page!
Why? Haddonfield superintendent and principal had the wisdom to recognize the horrible impact of having a hate symbol in the yearbook, and they had the moral courage to do something about it.
High Tech students deserve the same wisdom and moral courage from their school officials!
Haddonfield principal said, "We are not assuming intent, but feel strongly this should be proactively addressed...we find the potential for overt racism offensive and intolerable; such acts have no place in our community and certainly not within our annual yearbook.” So they are replacing the page at district expense to ensure that these keepsakes are hate-free.
This is what Superintendent Lin-Rodriguez and the HCST Board of Education should have said and done to address the white supremacist hate symbol STILL on plain display in the 2020 HTHS yearbook. It is not too late for them to do the right thing and #replacethepage!
