Dating websites to disclose police records for all users to protect women from violence
The Issue
Every day it seems there is another story of domestic violence in the press, women are being assaulted and even worse killed by abusive men, often with a record and history of abuse.
Just recently a man in Hull was convicted of waterboarding his partner because he believed she was having an affair, he had 6 previous convictions for abuse, they met online. There is an epidemic, and in a world that is obsessed with materialism and instant fame, narcissism will get worse before it gets better.
In today's society online dating plays a vital role in connecting people who otherwise would be alone, and everyone wants to be loved, and in that respect dating websites play a great role, I met my partner on one.
But the dating company has a responsibility to protect their users, both men and women, although abuse by men on women is far more rampant.
There are services like Claire's Law already out there but it isn't being used enough, and the websites should also be informing all there female users to check with Claire's Law before going on dates.
Or, they can go a step further and make it compulsory for all members to have a police check, we ask for police checks for so many other things so why not this?
Any users found with a violent history, or a history of abuse should be refused an account. At minimum, the record should be displayed so women can make an informed choice.
With today's technology it shouldn't be so difficult to link dating website databases to the national police records database?

It is estimated that 33% of all women experience domestic abuse in their lifetime
It is around 35 times before a woman is assaulted before she seeks help
112 women are killed by their male partners or former partners

Dating websites have a duty to protect women (and men) and that should start by enabling women to make informed choices and avoid men with a history of abuse and violence.
The companies that operate the dating sites will no doubt protest about this idea as it will cost them money, but people's lives should be more important than profit.
