The Indiscriminate Killer

A long time ago a villager from Myanmar (then known as Burma) told a shocking and heartbreaking story. One day while he was out farming he saw a herd of elephant (a mother with her 2 calfs) crossing a field. After about a minute he heard an explosion - Boom!. The mother elephant had stepped on a landmine. Her entire leg was blown off and the calfs were panicking and crying. Sadly stories like this are far too common. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines estimates that there about 110 million buried landmines still left in the world. It's these landmines that have claimed the lives of camels, tigers, water buffalos, gazelles, leopards, and bears. The list goes on and on, any and all animal heavy enough will trigger the mines. What's worst is hunters have taken advantage of the mines. Bait is left on top of the mines to attract predators such as tigers. The hunter than collects and sells whatever parts are left. Mines are the gift that keeps on giving, they leak chemicals into the ground which poisons the very ground the animals walk on. They contaminate water supplies leaving the local animals too disease-ridden to hunt. Mines serve no purpose, all they do is maim and kill the innocent. Whether it's the local villagers or a curious animal the outcome is the same. Thank You for all of your support so far. We managed to pass 2000 signatures in a matter of days.
