CEO Kitty Block - Stop Promoting Back Yard Rabbit Breeders!

The Issue

While educating with a lot of great information on rabbits; the section on “Where to get a bunny” falls short of reality.   AT NO TIME IS THERE A LACK OF RABBITS IN NEED OF ADOPTION and "responsible back yard rabbit breeders" are almost nonexistent.

Not only is the Humane Society’s website promoting back yard rabbit breeders, their recommendation is referenced on hundreds of Veterinary websites  with the same "Tips for Pet Owners" article recommending purchasing rabbits from back yard breeders when first options of "rescues and shelters are exhausted”.

The Vet websites "Tips for Pet Owners" also suggest "bunny proofing back yards" where domestic rabbits are not safe from predators unless playing in 4 sided supervised pens, are in danger of getting EC, disease from the ground and the deadly RHDV2 virus.

Rabbit rescues are constantly overrun as well as the animal shelters and more unwanted rabbits are being dumped in the wild to suffer and die. Unaltered rabbits are being sold at pet stores who purchase them from back yard breeders.  Many shelters and backyard breeders don’t spay and neuter. Right now baby bunnies are being abused by small children because parents by them as toys and the bunnies fates are sealed.

We the petitioners respectfully request HSUS stop promoting back yard rabbit breeders as a source for the public to "buy a rabbit" and instead recommend only rescues and shelters for rabbit adoptions.

We respectfully request HSUS contact the Creator of the Newsletter Library, Tips for Pet Owners and ask them to remove their recommendations of purchasing rabbits from back yard breeders while referencing the HSUS website article supporting breeders.

We respectfully request HSUS join in the cause to stop pet stores, farm stores, pet swaps and fairs from selling baby bunnies and rabbits as well as Easter rabbits and to regulate back yard breeders.

Every year the amount of unwanted dumped pet domestic rabbits raises, as well as the suffering, serious injuries (broken backs/bones from children dropping, predator attacks and more) including death rates.  The issue is shamefully out of control, please do better.
