Humboldt California Faculty Association started this petition to Humboldt State University Provost Provost Capps and

Humboldt State University's administration is directing department chairs to make permanent and extensive cuts to course offerings over the next two years. These cuts will result in some departments having their course offerings depleted by as much as 25%, limiting student access to classes and faculty support while delaying pathways to graduation.

The administrative directive is causing committed educators to lose work and healthcare benefits. These are faculty members who took on extra work when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, absorbing the shock for the university by moving their courses online to ensure HSU continued to serve students. At the same time, more upper-level administrators are being hired and the college continues to prioritize growth—except when it comes to faculty.* Now, to balance the budget, the HSU administration is pressuring faculty union members to cut union jobs—at a time when faculty need them most. CFA Humboldt believes that cuts to faculty jobs and healthcare during a pandemic is immoral and urges the university to Push Pause on cuts.

As a part of the broader HSU community (faculty member, student, staff, alumni, or Humboldt resident), I am signing this petition in solidarity with HSU faculty; I agree that the administration should Push Pause on cutting classes or faculty positions in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why Push Pause?

1. We are in a national emergency.

2. We must protect our primary mission of educating students by continuing to provide the courses and faculty expertise necessary to graduate.

3. Planning for budget cuts two years from now is premature. The Biden administration may approve a stimulus package before the end of the school year that makes a financial difference for HSU.

4. HSU’s recent enrollment challenges can be alleviated through careful management. We are already seeing less drastic drops in enrollment than expected. We need to continue to increase HSU’s appeal, not decrease opportunities for students.

5. Leadership at other universities have agreed to freeze administrative hiring and take graduated reductions in pay. Cutting the salaries of people making more than $150,000/year instead of people making less than $50,000/year is more in-line with HSU’s stated values.

6. HSU administration should work with the union to determine alternative and fair solutions rather than create unnecessary crises for faculty and students.

7. We can do better!

I agree with CFA: Push Pause on cuts today!
