South Africa recently hosted the global HSBC Cape Town 7’s rugby tournament. We went to show HSBC what South Africans think of their investment in coal here and take the fight for HSBC to #quitfundingfossils to them. Instead of allowing the peaceful protest in a public space, HSBC sent in police and security to arrest us. They don't want the public to know they are funding dirty energy.
While bankers in the north get rich and enjoy swish hospitality suites at local sports events, the global south suffers -- and the banks call it development.
HSBC’s policy could encourage other fossil fuel funding banks to set up their own loopholes and double standards for bankrolling dirty energy in developing countries. We want an end to racist, exclusionary and exploitative policies. HSBC must divest from all dirty energy projects, and commit to a 1.5 degree future by ending backing to companies and projects that are jeopardising that future.
HSBC is very sensitive to public pressure, and they are proud of the events and programmes they sponsor, but obviously not of the fossils that they fund. Harassment and intimidation will not stop us from demanding that we have a #RightToBreathe too.
