Articulate and Adopt an Agenda for Access

The Issue

This petition, with a list of signatures, will be presented to mayoral candidates and media in early October.  Thank you for your support!

Dear Candidate for Mayor,

In 2010, Canada signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities, and the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission agrees that it binds all levels of government in Nova Scotia:

GOVERNMENTS  "shall take appropriate measures to ensure to persons with disabilities access, on an equal basis with others, to the physical environment, to transportation, to information and communications... and to other facilities and services open or provided to the public"

If you are elected mayor, we ask your commitment to

-make accessibility a central goal of your administration

-identify and eliminate obstacles and barriers to accessibility

-review procedures and policies and develop plans to ensure equitable access

-encourage persons with disabilities to take an active role in government

-include accessibility as part of the mission and responsibility of every department

We look forward to learning in detail and before voting day how your administration will support these important goals.

Thank you for your commitment to a better Halifax.
