Upliftment of Indian Education System
The Issue
I am a Student and ,as a student, have a lot of problems with the present education system of India. It's not like I totally boycott the present education system as it is one of the best in the world but still there are loop holes which are needed to be filled in order to elevate the education system today.
1. Our present curriculum focuses more on testing one's memory rather than them something. Students are just required to cram up the stuff whether they understand it or not. They cram it for exams and then everything goes blank after the exams. Passing the exams and gaining marks has been made the sole purpose of education that we receive. None thinks about learning. This, in a way, kills the creativity of the students and make them dumb. They are unable to think, have their own original ideas because the classroom has been made a place to cram up things,a place to teach them how to gain marks while Classroom should be a place of learning, place of healthy discussions, where ideas should be talked about more often. This would regenerate their interest in studies. This would make them take the new challenges and participate in the class. Learning would be a fun then.
2. The syllabus that is taught to the students is a lot and scratches only the surfaces in every field which isn't good the students. They don't get to study good enough about anything even if anything interests them. So there is a strong need to revisit the syllabus both at the school and college level.
3. I am primarily concerned with the deteriorating condition of the technical education at the college and university level. Apart from the prestigious government colleges, the teachers in most or i would say 80-90% of the colleges are incompetent. Their subject knowledge below average and they are teaching students in the technical institutions which isn't good for the future of the nation. In the present time we need to produce quality engineers and technical people but the kind of education being provided is just not acceptable. There are no facilities in these colleges to ensure overall development of a student. So it would be better such colleges and universities are put on a check by government. There should be clear directions to such institutions to maintain the standard and quality of education failing which their affiliations should be revoked. As there is a test for the students , there should be tests for teachers too, every year or every couple of years to keep a test on them. Apart from them, it should be made mandatory for teachers to have a proper training or diploma on " HOW TO TEACH." because most of them don't know the proper ways of teaching. This "HOW TO TEACH" diploma should be given by government only and proper scientific ways of teaching should be taught to them. The skyrocketing number of technical institutions should be put a check on. And there should be taken measures to spread awareness among parents to not blindly push their children into engineering . Whatever I say here for the technical institutions also applies to other type institutions offering arts,science,medical or any other kind of education. Schools should have similar checks. Government schools should be improved in terms of education and facilities too. The selection procedure of teachers should be made more fair, transparent and corruption free.
4. Practical education should be made a necessary part and shouldn't be confined to just completing practical files, doing practicals which you have no idea about or just a time pass. The conclusions of a practical should be made clear to the students they should be allowed to work on their ideas too.
5. Commercialization of education is a serious problem which also need serious consideration from the concerned authorities.
6. There are other activities like sports and arts and students which are interested in those must be given equal opportunities in schools to learn about those too. Students interested should be given proper regarding those too. At the senior secodary level, when the streams are divided into non-medical, medical and others, there should be divisions for other kind of interests and talents too.
The line is that everyone is talented in his own way. None should be deemed useless just because he can't solve some maths or science problems. Fish shouldn't be judged on its ablity to climb a tree. That's unfair.
Education is the only way with which our nation can come out of all the situations and troubles.Education is the only key to progress.
Hence I request the honorable Supreme Court of India, HRD Ministry and Honorable Prime Minister of India to take decisive steps and save the future of our country.
