How to stabilise housing affordability across Britain

Let’s bring 'truly affordable' housing right into our towns, instead of having poorly designed housing built in locations surrounding them.
Please vote AGAINST The Planning and Infrastructure Bill currently before Parliament by signing this petition.
People want and need alternative proposals to The Planning and Infrastructure Bill, better solutions which are worthy of a proper debate in Parliament. Democracy, and our very communities as we currently know them, are at stake here.
The House of Lords has already expressed grave reservations concerning this Bill. It was debated there on Wednesday 25th June 2025. Look on Hansard for the whole debate that day if you like but please exercise your vote because this completely unsuitable Bill is still proceeding.
The Bill earlier scraped through its third reading in the House of Commons on 10 June 2025 by a vote of 306 to 174, despite embarrassing reservations from many MPs who variously described it as “flawed,” and damaging to local communities.
Our government is forgetting the fundamental basis for having made the Town and Country Planning Act in 1948 immediately following peace being declared. This may be in their rush to try and solve today’s housing crisis but that would be forgetting what we all fought for. Doing this would not bring the required result for local democracy, it would bring in a new and unwelcome dictatorship.
Local communities must jealously guard their say over what happens in their areas. Removing their democratic right, by using the powers set down in The Planning and Infrastructure Bill would be a travesty of justice. The time to object to this is now.

The recent Panorama TV programme criticising the way in which estate agents currently work has also highlighted some of the extremely damaging failures.
The Planning and Infrastructure Bill is fatally flawed.
The erroneous argument being made by the proponents of the Bill dares to suggest that such ideas are for NIMBYs. This is wrong, simplistic and utterly contemptible.
Sign this petition if you want to stop those in Whitehall deciding local town planning matters for themselves remotely!
The community knows best in such matters.
Local town councils used to have the power to decide planning matters themselves. They are still supposed to be doing this under the adopted Neighbourhood Development Plans system but the present government wants to remove this democratic right entirely.
We are campaigning for these powers to be properly “restored” to all communities across Britain. People living within their communities know far better than remote MPs with their political baggage and hidden agendas.
We will need in excess of 10,000 signatures for this to even get a proper debate in parliament. That, in itself, is a travesty of justice of course so Please help today.
Central government has too much on its plate requiring urgent consideration anyway!
For that reason alone, and because of the mess planning is in right now, the government should fully devolve the vital work of addressing local issues to local communities once again.
Now we, the undersigned, urgently call upon the relevant authorities to take immediate action to bring adequate affordability to local housing markets across Britain.
