More cities switch to warm white LED street lights, Houston takes note

The move to switch from LED streetlights with a high blue component to warmer white street lights is gaining momentum. Both Los Angeles and New York City are abandoning white 4000K street lights for newer warmer 2700K to 3000K models at lower wattage. Advances in lumens per watt are allowing other cities to use lighting that is 30% to 50% lower in wattage than that installed in Houston. Chicago is testing warmer LEDs ahead of their 270,000 light installation. Phoenix has just decided to abandon 4000K and instead install 2700K LEDs citywide, the color of the common warm white light bulb. They will also pull 2000 white LED street lights already installed and switch them to 2700K. Our counterpart in Phoenix has shared the same information we have here and their Council listened. All of this has been brought to the attention of the Mayor and City Council here in Houston. We have heard that a city rep will be talking to representatives from Los Angeles and Phoenix about their lighting at a conference this week. Nothing concrete yet, but this is the most hopeful sign we have seen so far. Will let you know if any changes are made in Houston.
