Omar Y started this petition to House of Representatives and

The US Government has defined people from MENA (middle eastern or north african) descent as white for too long at their own convenience. However anyone from that descent can confirm that our treatment is far from that of white people and only a percentage of us have white skin. Many people with middle eastern sounding names are routinely subjected to extra security at airports, and any attempt to be removed from that list is met with little action. "Dr. Rana described how airport officials targeted her family, pulling her eight-year-old son from the line and taking apart the Boy Scout pinewood derby car he had built. Her son, Omar, is now routinely targeted at airports." (from THREAT AND HUMILIATION Racial Profiling, Domestic Security, and Human Rights in the United States). Middle eastern people are labeled as terrorists for crimes whereas white people who commit the same crimes rarely even receive the title of "domestic terrorist". They are instead given terms in the media such as "mass shooter" or simply "bomber" whereas middle eastern people are immediately given the title of terrorist regardless of if their action was political in nature or not. By grouping us into the white category it attempts to cover up the fact that we are a minority, at the convenience of the government. We miss out on many minority programs when required to apply to colleges and jobs under the guise of being "white" though many of us are lacking the white name privilege. An attempt was made in 2014 to add the MENA category to the census but yet no change has been made, I am still represented as white in the 2020 though the color of my skin and texture of my hair reflects nothing of your average white person. Unless we are to receive the benefits of white privilege and fair treatment then I would rather be considered under the MENA category and not white, thank you for your time.
