Strengthening the punishments for animal abuse in UK

The Issue

‘Sparky the puppy who was senselessly beat with a hammer to death, shown above’

I believe that it is sick that laws for animal mistreatment, murder and abuse are far less severe than the laws for killing and mistreating humans. Yes, humans are technically more important but that doesn’t mean that killing or mistreating innocent pets should only result in fines, a temporary ban on owning animals or a year or two in jail, the gap is too big and in my opinion should be strengthened.  Recently a “man” from County Armagh was charged for beating a puppy to death with a hammer and only sentenced to a PATHETIC 15 months in jail. Yes, he is banned from owning any animal for 30 years but if he is capable of beating an innocent puppy to death with a hammer, what else is this sick, twisted thing capable of doing next? In my opinion more should be done to protect pets and animals who suffer from mistreatment and cruelty by creating harsher punishments for the abusers. I would like longer sentences to be carried out, bans to be implemented forever, not just 30 years or however long each individual gets and fines aren’t enough. Animals are living beings, NOT PROPERTY! Roughly on average you could get around 15 years for murder in the uk, before early release would be considered. I don’t agree with this, but since animals are seen as less important than humans which in a way I can agree with that, why don’t we sentence those who kill animals to roughly 13 years before parole can be offered? I understand that it would be a very controversial thing and probably wouldn’t get passed to sentence those that kill animals to something like 40 or 50 years, which would be more deserved in my opinion but why can’t we work together and find a good compromise that will work?
