Produce more ethnic dolls in the UK
The Issue
I have been searching for a baby doll for my daughter for some time now, in doing so, it became apparent that there was no stock for quality interactive ethnic dolls in all major stockists. Yet the same dolls were being sold on EBay and Amazon for £200-400?! I believe in the 21st century we should not have to be searching so hard for dolls/toys that emulate society, on a whole we live in a multicultural society, yet manufacturers like Zapf Creation are saying there is not a high enough demand in the UK for the ethnic version of their dolls. They were also very clear in stating that other European countries and the Americas order high quantities of their dolls and are very popular. On the other side of the spectrum, mothers of colour are constantly saying where can they get these dolls and why are the so hard to purchase. Suppliers are saying they can't get stock in large quantities, despite repeatedly requesting them. Somewhere in the midst of all this bureaucracy, there is one thing that's not being addressed, and that is the issue of young girls of colour growing up without a clear representation of themselves or their culture. Are our young girls still to grow up questioning whether their natural beauty is acceptable. With that in mind I would like for people of all colours to get involved in raising awareness and making a change. @wheresmyface?
