SAFCEI CALLS ON HOTEL VERDE TO MAKE IT “BETTER FOR HENS” BY GOING CAGE-FREE

Hotel Verde claims to be “Africa’s greenest hotel group” who believe that “luxury and social, environmental and economical best practice are not mutually exclusive”,  yet they do not extend this care to the health of their customers nor the millions of egg-laying hens suffering in its supply chain. By switching to cage-free eggs they will be addressing many social issues at once including animal welfare, food safety, environmental sustainability, and corporate social responsibility.

SAFCEI has been in conversation with Hotel Verde for over a year now, and while they claim to be in the process of reviewing their current egg procurement process, they have failed to publicly state their commitment to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs throughout their operations by 2025.

We are looking to Hotel Verde to meet basic animal welfare standards and abolishing some of the worst factory farm abuses. Battery caged hens are confined to tiny, filthy cages. These cages are so small and packed with birds that hens cannot do anything that is natural or important to them. Often, their body parts are caught in the caging, which results in fractured or broken bones, deformities, and severe feather loss. Some hens, exhausted or unable to move, are trampled to death by their cage mates. 

Many of the largest companies in the world have committed to ending the use of cages including Marriott International, Hilton Hotels, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, Best Western, InterContinental Hotels, Accor Hotels, Hyatt, General Mills, Unilever, Nestle, Lidl,  Aldi, Aramark, Sodexo, Mondelez, Famous Brands and Compass Group and many others.

We think that animal welfare, food safety and environmental sustainability should be a priority for a company that claims to be “Africa’s greenest Hotel”. Serving your customers eggs from hens that are locked up in battery cages under cruel conditions is not consistent with your management plan of ensuring that your operations are “better for the guest”, “better for the community” and “better for the planet”.

We are calling on Hotel Verde to publish a strong commitment to go 100% cage-free for all shell, liquid and ingredient eggs throughout its operations by 2025 or sooner. We also ask that they provide annual progress reporting to ensure they meet this deadline.
