The Issue

Housing the Houseless. But most importantly, where to house that is not an asylum, prison, mental hospital or any other kind of lock up. Finding a better more positive and ultimately successful solution for the "Homeless Crisis." One that will not only be better for the residents in the residential areas. But will also open up more jobs for people. Thats why we and we being The People, want to suggest that somewhere such as the old Kmart building on mission Street be turned into a shelter. Much like the navigation center. The location is ideal because its far enough away from most residential neighborhoods. Its big enough for a large amount of beds and showers and other things the people going from the streets to indoors need. The parking lot alone is large enough for those who live in vehicles. And it would open more jobs for people because it will need staff to supervise the residents when needed. Not to mention the building is pretty much just sitting there doing nothing anyway. So we are making this petition to convince the city officials to take this idea and help make it a reality. The city wants a solution. But before a solution there has to be a way to get there. But with the growing amount of people living on streets or in parks or vehicles and so on. There is not enough places or ways that aren't extremely stressful and confusing to be able to find the right direction to start let alone be able to achieve a solution. With more people being able to succeed the sooner more will and those that do inspire more to do the same. The kmart lot is roughly 10.73 acres worth of property. Counting the parking lot That much area can fit easily around 500 est people. Inside the building alone can fit around 300 est. beds or more. beds opened up for people on the streets. Places like the navigation center only has about 75 beds. Then factor in the UGM, simonka house and other shelters already going in salem and keizer. With the add on of the kmart building there would be an estimated 1,000 beds for helping house the homeless. With an estimated 2,154 homeless people in salem thats an estimated 50% that will be off the streets.
