Clean Air to Breathe in Mumbai

Clean Air to Breathe in Mumbai
The Issue
The Honourable Supreme Court,
We humbly pray that strict orders be passed against the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai( BMC) for endangering lives of innocent and helpless citizens of Mumbai and surrounding areas and infringing a Fundamental Right of clean Air .
The BMC is statutorily required to implement the Municipal Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules,2000( MSW Rules).
The BMC has disregarded these rules as well as the Orders of the Bombay High Court dated 6th August 1996 and 2nd April 2013.
Despite the Rs. 2231.95 crores ( Rupees Two Thousand Two Hundred Thirty one crores) BMC 2015-2016 budget allocated for the Waste Management Department, the BMC has demonstrated Non-performance,dereliction of duty, sustained negligence, laxity and irresponsible behaviour, thereby resulting into Several Fires at the Deonar Dumping Ground which has a cascading effect on the Air and lives of citizens in and around Mumbai. Small Children,Senior Citizens and patients suffering from Respiratory Diseases have been severely affected by the Smog.
Our prayers are that
- Deonar Dumping Ground should be shut down immediately.
- Strict compliance of the MSW Rules and orders of the Bombay High Court.
