End Bear-Baiting and the Spring Bear Hunt

The Issue

We would like to see you end the Spring Bear Hunt and any baiting of bears.

It is unethical to shoot bears in the spring when they are vulnerable, hungry, and still have dependent cubs.

Approximately 30% of the bears hunted in Ontario's spring hunt are females and many have cubs. The hundreds of bear cubs orphaned die as a result of losing their mother's protection. Bear cubs require a full year with their mother.

Baiting bears usually involves a barrel with rotten meat or sweets left out for the hungry, emerging bears. Over the course of a month a reliable food source is established. Often cameras are set up to track the bears' feeding schedule. The hunter, from their hiding blind, then shoots the bear. The bear is at a total disadvantage with this unsportsmanlike procedure.

Bears have their rightful place in the ecosystem and deserve respect.
