The Issue

At AdvoKC, our mission is deeply rooted in strengthening democracy and ensuring that governance authentically reflects the voices and aspirations of all citizens, especially those who have historically been marginalised. When campaign promises, such as the 35% commitment to women’s representation in leadership, are not upheld, it gravely undermines public trust in democratic processes and effectively silences a significant portion of the population whose involvement is vital for achieving equitable and effective governance. This issue transcends mere numbers; it touches upon the fundamental principles of fairness, representation, and inclusivity.

Recent developments following the confirmation of eight new commissioners by the Edo State House of Assembly on August 20, 2025, have compelled us to express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the present composition of your executive cabinet. During your electoral campaign, Your Excellency pledged that 35 percent of cabinet positions would be allocated to women. This well-received commitment generated significant hope among the people of Edo State, especially women, who anticipated a government reflecting an inclusive and representative administration.

Unfortunately, the recent appointments fall short of this promise, threatening to perpetuate a history of underrepresentation and undermining the progressive ideals many hoped for under your leadership. Gender parity in government is not only a matter of justice but also one of effective governance. Diverse leadership brings a breadth of perspectives and approaches that can lead to more holistic policy outcomes and a more prosperous and innovative society.

We urge Your Excellency to revisit and rectify the current cabinet composition to fulfill your promise of equitable representation for women. This action would not only honor your campaign pledge but also renew public faith in the integrity of electoral commitments and demonstrate a genuine commitment to empowering all segments of society.

Stand with us in holding our leaders accountable to their promises and ensuring that Edo State sets a precedent for democratic integrity and inclusivity. Sign this petition to advocate for the equitable representation of women in the Edo State cabinet.
