The Issue

🌼 Every parent of a child who has passed through the doors of Yorkhill Hospital carries with them stories both heartwarming and heart-wrenching. My daughter, Emma, was a patient at Yorkhill. Through her journey, we found not only exceptional medical care but also a community that became family, offering support, strength, and love in our hardest times.

The Splash Glasgow, in partnership with the Yorkhill & Kelvingrove Community Council and Cllr Philip Bratt, has launched a campaign to establish a memorial garden on the former Yorkhill Sick Children’s Hospital and Royal Maternity Hospital grounds, honouring the children who were cared for there and the staff who supported them.

The site has been declared “surplus to requirements,” and is expected to be marketed for sale to developers in early 2026. Before this land changes forever, we believe that part of it should be protected and dedicated to something deeply meaningful: a memorial garden.

Yorkhill is more than just a hospital; it’s a place where children have fought bravely and where staff have dedicated their lives to making a difference. The stories and connections that have woven together within its walls deserve to be honored and remembered in a meaningful way.

A memorial garden at Yorkhill can serve as a tranquil and reflective space for families, staff, and the community. It would be a place to remember the strengths and spirits of the children, and the dedication of those who cared for them. Such a garden would celebrate life and offer solace to those grieving.

Many hospitals around the world have implemented similar initiatives with great success. For instance, the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne has a stunning children’s garden that plays an integral role in the well-being of both patients and families. Yorkhill deserves this, too.

Let’s create something beautiful and lasting. A space that grows with time, echoing the laughter and dreams of the children, as well as the hopes of parents and caregivers. This memorial garden wouldn’t just be a physical space; it would be an embodiment of Yorkhill’s spirit.

Please join me in supporting this initiative. Sign this petition to urge the hospital authorities to establish a permanent memorial garden at Yorkhill. Together, we can honour the past and ensure Yorkhill’s legacy endures in a way that future generations can cherish. 🌹
