Honour OSAP funding for private college students enrolling pre-August 2026
Honour OSAP funding for private college students enrolling pre-August 2026
The Issue
We have always dreamt of building a meaningful career, one that not only supports us financially but also allows us to contribute positively to society. This dream led us to enroll at a reputable private career college, leveraging the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) to afford my education.
Thousands of students like us made this decision prior to the changes coming into effect on August 1, 2026, based on existing OSAP guidelines which included financial assistance for private career colleges. The new revisions to OSAP policies threaten to withdraw this lifeline, creating an unjust situation for those of us already committed to our educational paths. With existing commitments, many of us cannot simply pivot to other institutions or programs without significant personal and financial repercussions.
Before finalizing our educational decisions, we diligently researched and depended on the stability of the OSAP funding as communicated to us. Making such fundamental changes partway through our education journey could lead to irreparable financial distress and derail our career plans.
Statistics show that around 35% of Ontario's post-secondary students rely on OSAP for their tuition and living expenses. With private career college students contributing substantially to the skilled workforce, removing OSAP for those already enrolled pre-August 2026 contradicts Ontario's goals of developing a competitive workforce.
A commitment to supporting all students who enrolled based on preexisting OSAP guidelines is necessary—otherwise, it risks betrayal of trust between the government and its citizens. This is not only a financial issue but a broader debate about fair practices and honouring commitments. It involves ensuring educational accessibility and supporting future contributors to our economy.
In order to preserve fairness and uphold integrity in educational policy, we are urging the Ontario government and the Ministry of Colleges and Universities to honour OSAP funding for all students enrolled in private career colleges before August 1, 2026. Let's ensure we support the educational and career aspirations of all students equally.
