Justice for Jalen Jemison

The Issue

We are seeking justice for Jalen Jemison. Jalen was 14 when he was killed in an auto accident on July 15, 2014. Jalen was a passenger in a vehicle that was traveling at a very high rate of speed in a 30 mile zone in Detroit, details from the accident show that skid marks of 165 feet were marked on the street which indicated a very high rate of speed and the driver was operating unsafely with two minor children in the vehicle. The driver was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, but fully recovered and he sustained minor injuries, but both children were killed. One of the children killed was the driver’s son, and the other child was the grandson of Gladys Shaw.  Recommendation of upcoming sentencing from Judge Cynthia Hathaway includes allowing the driver to keep a valid license, and to complete a five year probation, with no jail time, which is completely unacceptable .Gladys has been unable to cope with the loss of her grandson who she raised and cared for since birth, and she feels the healing process cannot begin until complete justice for her grandson is served. The criminal justice system has delayed the trial countless times since 2014, which has had an impact on the families healing process.  From 2014 until now, Gladys feels that the case has been mishandled by law enforcement as well as Judge Hathaway who has been overseeing the case.  The punishment that has been rendered is not in par with the crime that has been committed against the family, and therefore we are requesting a petition for stricter sentencing to ensure that no other family will have to endure the pain and suffering we are currently experiencing.
