We the undersigned request that all Pounds in Australia under your direction, keep companion animals of all descriptions for a minimum of 7 holding days.

The issue

Some pounds in Australia do NOT hold animals for 7 days therefore the owner or a Rescue organization DO NOT have enough time to retrieve the said animal. Some animals are euthanised within days, as is the case with Rockhampton Pound that only hold for 72 hours and BATPC did not have enough time to save a dog, some accidentally as was the four (4) cases lately in a Sydney pound, even though the owners were on their way to retrieve their pets.

If there were uniformity throughout Australia and people were aware that they had 7 days to either rescue an animal or retrieve their lost pet, it would give all animals held in Pounds a chance.

We are totally aware that people are responsible for their animals but in all honesty we are also aware that some people are motivated to breed animals for profit or other motives and some people are not responsible which leaves these animals vulnerable to the whim of the breeder or owner. A register for all Australians to breed ANY ANIMAL would reduce the Pound situation as those who do not register and are caught would be liable to prosecution. It would deter a lot of 'backyard' breeders.

We understand that some creatures need to be euthanized due to injury, however not healthy animals that can be homed if just enough time is allowed.

Both of the dogs shown in the picture are from Pounds and saved by both Bull Arab the Pawfect Companion Australia wide and Animal Welfare League, Hawkesbury Branch NSW, both Rescue organisations who HAD enough time to save these dogs.

Please consider this petition a cry from all animals, signed by very caring, responsible people from all walks of life who just want a 'fair deal' for animals waiting for a new home or to be returned to their original owners.

It may be 7 days for us but it's a 'life time' for the animal.
