1818 COLWELL STREET IS COMING DOWN…BEING DEMOLISHED.
From the moment The HRC Meeting began dealing with 1818 Colwell Street Garage in today’s meeting - I knew it was over for us. You could literally see it. And to confirm my gut feeling and utter amazement, they then mentioned THE HRC and the Developer/Builder went on a site visit. That sealed the deal to approve demolition of the garage - for sure.
As the Developer said, so adequately, we care what the Community (meaning Uptown Partners) and City Of Pittsburgh (meaning Karen Abrams) wants. No mention of the Tito/Mecca/Zizza family at all. Ever.
When the garage is demolished the bricks will be stored off-site. They will be attached, as the picture shows, to mimic the look of the Garage. Supposedly, it will be at the exact location where 1818 Colwell Street sits now. Also, no images were shown giving any perspective, in relationship to the House or how the ‘bricks’ will look from 1817 Fifth Avenue and Colwell Street.
The big ‘give’ for immortalizing the beginning of Rolling Rock Beer and its distribution - anywhere - is ensuring - signage. That’s it. Something that had already been required. The HRC must approve said signage.
BTW: The HRC absolutely should visit every location that may potentially become a Historic site. The fact they don’t - is very sad.
As this chapter closes, I want to continue thanking every one of you for letting this issue matter. It means everything. Always will.
