Honor Val Kilmer and Joel Schumacher – Release the Schumacher Cut
The Issue
To the leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery, including:
David Zaslav (CEO),
Michael De Luca & Pamela Abdy (Motion Picture Group),
James Gunn & Peter Safran (Co-Chairs of DC Studios)
Casey Bloys (HBO and Max Content),
and JB Perrette (CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games)
We, the undersigned fans, respectfully request the official release of the extended version of Batman Forever, commonly known as the "Schumacher Cut."
Reportedly running over 2 hours and 30 minutes, this cut represents director Joel Schumacher’s original artistic vision, one that delves deeper into Bruce Wayne’s psychological journey, exploring themes of identity, duality, and buried trauma. It is widely known that this darker, more character-driven cut exists in a near-complete state, and has been publicly acknowledged by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman and filmmaker Kevin Smith, both of whom have voiced support for its release.
The film already holds a unique place in pop culture history, not least because of Schumacher’s inspired decision to include “Kiss from a Rose,” a song that became a global hit and emotional touchstone for audiences. That creative choice highlights Schumacher’s gift for blending stylized visuals with honest, emotional depth, something a fuller cut could explore even more richly.
In recent years, audiences have embraced director’s cuts. The overwhelming response to Zack Snyder’s Justice League demonstrated that there is an eager audience for these projects, capable of driving new subscriptions and boosting viewership. Releasing the Schumacher Cut would not only celebrate his creative voice, but also honor Val Kilmer, whose portrayal of Bruce Wayne was layered and deeply felt. With his recent passing, this restoration would stand as a poignant tribute to his contribution to the Batman mythos.
Batman Forever also carries immense nostalgic value. For Gen X and Millennials, it was a defining cinematic moment, and Gen Z has since discovered the film through newer iterations of the Batman franchise. Reviving the original cut would breathe new life into the Dark Knight’s legacy and connect with multiple generations of fans.
We recognize that decisions like this involve time, resources, and broader strategy. This petition is not a demand, but a heartfelt appeal grounded in admiration, respect, and gratitude for the storytelling your studio continues to bring to life.
We also welcome the involvement of the original cast and crew, such as Chris O’Donnell, Nicole Kidman, and Jim Carrey – as well as others who’ve expressed appreciation for Joel Schumacher and Val Kilmer, to help champion this fitting tribute.
Thank you for considering our request. Releasing the Schumacher Cut would reaffirm Warner Bros. Discovery’s commitment to artistic integrity, fan engagement, and the preservation of visionary filmmaking.
With deep respect,
