Honor the Memory of Ms. Niesha Jones by Granting HCPS's Missed Day Waiver Request
The Issue
Ms. Niesha Jones was a pillar of the Joppatowne High School community. Her unexpected passing has left a void that is deeply felt by everyone, students and staff alike. This loss not only takes a toll emotionally but disrupts the regular flow of the educational process. Therefore, it is crucial that the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) grant Harford County Public Schools (HCPS)'s waiver request for the missed day of classes, allowing the Joppatowne High School community to heal, to grieve, and to remember the contributions of Ms. Jones together.
Respect for the bereaved is ensconced in policy across several educational institutions. It is not unprecedented – Yale University, for instance, has specific Guidelines for Death in the University Community, recognizing that "the death of a student, faculty, or staff member is a serious loss that affects the entire community." More importantly, it is a fundamentally compassionate response to a community in mourning.
Over the years, Ms. Niesha Jones touched many lives, inspiring countless students and colleagues with her dedication, spirit, and love for her students. By honoring this request, MSDE would not only be providing the Joppatowne High School community with the time to properly mourn and celebrate her life but would also send a strong message about the value of emotional well-being and community in our education system.
For these reasons, we ask you to honor her memory by granting this waiver. Please join us in this petition to grant HCPS's request for a waiver for the missed day. Let us stand together during this difficult time. Sign and share this petition to show your support.
