This petition calls on LAUSD to fully fund the staff and arts programming necessary to uphold the original vision of Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts (Grand Arts). We urge the LAUSD School Board to establish a BOARD RESOLUTION and a PERMANENT FUNDING LINE to ensure ongoing financial support for this specialized high school. This funding should cover:

 • Staffing and resources needed to maintain its 8-period schedule

 • Essential arts materials, equipment, and supplies

 • Facilities upkeep and maintenance to keep the school at a state-of-the-art level

Grand Arts was founded to be a nationally competitive, high-caliber arts high school, and LAUSD must honor that commitment.

Background

In 2009, LAUSD established a district-wide arts high school, Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts (Grand Arts), designed with an 8-period “4x4” block schedule. This unique structure allows students to receive a robust academic education while developing as artists in Dance, Music, Theater, Visual Arts, and Media Arts through a sequenced, pre-conservatory curriculum.

Reducing the school day to six periods would gut this model, making Grand Arts an arts school in name only.

Why Arts Education Matters

The California Education Code mandates that all schools offer music, dance, theater, and visual arts year-round. However, only 11% of California schools currently follow this mandate. Arts education is essential, not optional.

 Students with arts education are:

 •  5x more likely to stay in school

 •  3x more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree

 •  4x more likely to receive academic recognition

The arts also play a critical role in mental health—with students facing unprecedented stress, access to creative outlets is more important than ever. Grand Arts was founded to fill a gap, providing an audition-free opportunity for all LAUSD students to develop their artistic voices.

For 16 years, Grand Arts has served as LAUSD’s flagship arts program, achieving:

✔️Honored in 2021 as a State of California Exemplary Arts Program. We currently have the CA State Teacher of the Year, choral music teacher- Drew Lewis. 

✔️ Consistently high graduation rates and college acceptances.

✔️ Students accepted to top universities (MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Cooper Union, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, Columbia, Tufts, etc.)

Failing to provide full funding would dismantle this success.

En 2009, LAUSD estableció una escuela secundaria de artes en todo el distrito, la Escuela de Artes Visuales y Escénicas Ramón C.
