The Issue

Imagine driving down a familiar road entering South Haven, Kansas, one you’ve traveled countless times. You're going the speed limit, cruising at 65 mph, when suddenly you approach an intersection after dusk with minimal lighting or warnings. It’s a scenario that many local drivers face daily. Tragically, it’s this very situation that claimed the life of our beloved friend Jordan, whose life was taken far too soon and almost taking the life of his Friend and Roommate Spencer.

The current stop sign at this regularly used state intersection is inadequate to ensure the safety of the diverse drivers who traverse it every day. Without sufficient lighting, it’s easy to miss, turning a harmless commute into a potential danger. To honor the memory of Jordan and to prevent future tragedies, we propose a simple yet effective solution: replacing the standard stop sign with a flashing stop sign, alongside a commemorative plate in Jordan's memory.

Flashing stop signs have been proven to increase driver awareness, according to studies by the Federal Highway Administration. These signs are particularly effective at night and in low visibility conditions, as they visually alert drivers from a greater distance. They have decreased intersection-related accidents by as much as 29% in similar scenarios.

By implementing a flashing stop sign at this intersection, we would not only honor Jordan's memory but also enhance the safety of our community. It's a fitting tribute and a practical preventative measure. Let's come together as a community to take decisive action and ensure that no other family has to endure the same heartache.

Join us in urging the state of Kansas to make this vital improvement in South Haven. Please sign this petition to advocate for a safer, more mindful driving environment while paying homage to a life lost too soon. Your signature can help turn this vision into reality.
