Kaylub Giamanco risked his life to stop a gunman at the school his two daughters attend. That courage deserves recognition from Bend, Oregon, and our country.

On October 15, three children and teacher Megan Lambert were senselessly and tragically killed at Silver Rail Elementary School. Another teacher, who survived without injury, tackled and fought the gunman. Kaylub, a local carpenter, followed the gunman into the building and stopped the attack. Police credit Kaylub and the teacher who intervened with preventing further loss of life.

I’m a local lawyer and lifelong Bend resident. I started this petition because our community should do more than say thank you to a father who stepped into danger to protect others. Kaylub's courageous undertaking is one that should not go unnoticed. 

We ask Mayor Melanie Kebler and the Bend City Council to honor Kaylub with the Key to the City. We also ask President Trump to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian honor. 

Once the teacher who confronted the gunman is publicly identified, we will update this petition to ask that she be honored alongside Kaylub, if she wishes.

We know Kaylub carries a heavy burden after that day, and we respect his privacy. Any recognition should happen if and when he and his family are ready to accept it. We also ask the city to make sure they have the support they need.
