For a millennium, the name "Abbas ibn Firnas" has been unfairly mocked by many, often used as a punchline for "failure."

The reality couldn't be more different.

Abbas ibn Firnas was not a failure. He was a 9th-century genius, an inventor, and the world's first test pilot. He lived for 12 years after his famed flight, scientifically identifying his one mistake: a missing tail.

While our local rumors mock him, the city where he flew (Córdoba, Spain) honors him with a bridge named after his engineering genius.

It is time to bring that honor home.

We petition the Dearborn City Council to name a street, a park, or a community square in honor of the true Abbas ibn Firnas.

Dearborn is the heart of the Arab-American community. We must show our children that we celebrate our builders, our inventors, and our "crazy" dreamers—not the critics.

This action will set an educational example for future generations. It's time to stop tearing our builders down and start lifting them up.
