Happy tamizh puttandu ௫௧௧௯ to all our Tamil brothers. Two thoughts on this day. The first is on the year 5119, and the second is on the script used to write Tamil.. According to Puranas, the death of Shri Krishna, at the hands of hunter Jara, put an end to Dvaapar Yug and marked the start of Kaliyug. If you have ever wondered when that happened according to the Gregorian calendar, the answer is February 17/18 3102 B.C. Since B.C means Before Christ, and the numbers are measured in negative scale, 3102 + 2017 = 5119. Exactly the same number of years that our Tamil brothers and sisters date their years. I leave it to those more learned than myself to research whether or not it is a coincidence. :-) The second thought is on the script used to write Tamil. It is a fallacy to say that Sanskrit can only be learnt or written in DevaNaagari(which is used for Hindi, Marathi etc). In fact, Sanskrit language was also written in Brahmi script, which closely resembles the current Tamil script. In fact, according to research from the Sanskrit Research Institute of Auroville, India, Tamil Language was written in exactly identical Brahmi Script until 600BC. After that gradual changes occurred resulting in the current script. Therefore a person versed in Tamil will have no difficulty in learning Sanskrit Language using the Brahmi script. There are also many sanskrit words that form the vocabulary of Tamil (e.g. modak, from modakkam - laddu). This is also the case for so many words around the Indian Peninsula. (Mata is probably universally used to denote mother, and has even become latin 'Mater', French 'Mère' and English 'Mother'). On these thoughts dear supporters, I urge you again to please keep sharing the link with your relatives and friends, and if they question you, point them to the petition, or to our page on Facebook.
