Appoint more Citizenship Judges ASAP & Reduce Backlog of "Non-routine" applications

The Issue

Honorable PM, Minister & MPs,

This petition is to draw your attention to the suffering of so the called "Non-routine" Citizenship Applicants, and the continuously increasing backlog of Canadian Citizenship applications.

According to various sources, the number of Canadian Citizenship applications thrown into "Non-Routine" bucket is continuously increasing. Even if 5% of applications are dumped into Non-Routine queue, that means tens of thousands of law abiding families living inside Canada are suffering the consequences of bureaucratic red tape which is not able to appoint more citizenship judges.

An investigation by CBC and Freedom of Information requests reveal that in reality:

  • Overall processing times for Canadian citizenship applications, routine and non-routine, have increased from 19 months in 2010 to 29 months.
  • More and more applications are being dumped into "Non-Routine" bucket, and backlog is continuously increasing.
  • While thousands of law abiding families suffer in the "Non-Routine" bucket, number of Citizenship judges available to decide on these Citizenship applications is only 12 out of 26 as of September 2015 data. Is it that complicated, or it is just bureaucratic Red Tape?
  • More and more applications are taking 3-4 years to process, and this is after the applicants have fulfilled 3-4 years of mandatory residence times to submit the citizenship application. That means more and more Permanent Residents are needing 6-8 years of waiting after becoming Permanent Residents to gain Citizenship. This is horrible.

We request the Liberal Administration appoint more Citizenship Judges ASAP, and clearing the continuously increasing backlog of Citizenship Immigration "non-routine" applications.
