“Mary has been crying every time I have seen her for the last two weeks. She was told this month that the police would be coming for her if she doesn’t move.”
Your efforts have helped the Government decide that Mary can stay in Millers Point but they are still insisting she move so they can sell to a large developer. They want her to move from her beloved home into entirely unsuitable accomodation. Mary has multiple health conditions and a deteriorating mobility impairment. The house offered to her requires that she climb two flights of stairs to use the toilet and bathroom and has no way for her to wash her clothes or have someone stay to care when she needs help!
You have achieved a great thing but the government seems no longer capable of actually responding properly to the need of the most vulnerable that are their clients and they are providing Mary with no choice at all. Please make sure your signature counts and ask your friends, colleagues, social justice allies, and neighbours to put their signatures alongside yours to stop this nightmare. It is truly remarkable that the Minister for Housing is allocating such inappropriate housing to elderly, frail individuals, compromising their safety, and ability to contribute meaningfully, yet expecting them to be grateful. Instead Mary is being made sick with stress, grief and an incredibly destructive service responses.
